Philodendron Shady Lady
Philodendron erubescens 'Shady Lady'
A striking mutation of the beloved Painted Lady Philodendron, the Shady Lady takes the chartreuse and yellow-speckled foliage of its parent and transforms it with a feathery, almost wispy variegation in shades of white, cream, and soft light green overlaid across the mottled leaf surface. Where the Painted Lady glows with warm citrus tones, the Shady Lady shifts the palette toward cooler, ethereal silvery-cream — a softer, more mysterious expression of the same Philodendron erubescens lineage, complete with the characteristic pink to red petioles that make this cultivar family so visually distinctive. A rare find even within a rare parent, it is a semi-vining to climbing cultivar that develops a full, layered presence with vertical support and rewards patient, consistent care with increasingly dramatic foliage.
This cultivar produces progressively larger, more expressive leaves as it matures on a moss pole or trellis — vertical support encourages tighter nodes and a fuller, more impressive specimen. It performs best in bright indirect light; insufficient light causes the cream and white variegation to fade and growth to become leggy, while direct sun scorches the lighter sectors. Water when the top 1-2" of medium is dry, allowing full drainage and never letting roots sit in standing water. Provide a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark. Humidity of 60-70% supports healthy variegation and lush growth. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-85°F away from cold drafts. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
