Colocasia Royal Hawaiian® Blue Hawaii Elephant Ear is a tropical beauty unlike any other. It typically grows to about 36 inches tall, but in optimal conditions, it can grow up to 50 inches tall. Large and heart shaped, the matte green leaves have prominent bluish-purple veins; undulating bluish purple margins; and semi-glossy, burgundy-colored stems when mature. Occasionally, it may produce yellowish green flowers (spathes), but they are usually hidden by the leaves and are not particularly showy.
A Colocasia esculenta species, commonly known as elephant ear or taro, Blue Hawaii is a tuberous, frost-sensitive perennial (Zones 8-12), featuring a tidy, upright, and clumping growth habit. This makes it a great choice for container gardens and can be grown in doors in a bright, sunny space. It's also a striking addition to pond margins and rain gardens. While its dramatic tropical foliage makes a bold statement when planted solo, grouping it with flowering plants creates an extraordinary visual effect.
Once established, Blue Hawaii elephant ear requires minimal care but should always remain moist. It thrives in sunny to partially shady locations with rich, fertile soils that range from medium to wet. In areas with hot summers, some afternoon shade is beneficial to prevent stress. This deer-resistant plant is perfect for low-maintenance gardens.
Plant Blue Hawaii elephant ear's 9- to 11-inch bulb (rhizome) 18 to 24 inches apart and 2 to 4 inches deep in mid-spring, ensuring soil and air temperatures are consistently above 60°F. In colder climates, dig up the bulbs in fall and store them in a cool, dry location where temperatures do not dip below 45°F.
