Anthurium sagittatum is a large, terrestrial aroid grown for its dramatic arrow-shaped foliage and upright growth habit. This species produces substantial sagittate (arrowhead-shaped) leaves with pronounced basal lobes and a strong central midrib. New leaves typically emerge in shades of bronze to reddish-green before maturing to deep green, with a slightly leathery texture as they harden.
In cultivation, Anthurium sagittatum forms a clumping rosette from a short stem, gradually increasing in spread and height under stable indoor conditions. Mature plants can produce upright inflorescences with green to purplish spathes and a contrasting spadix. Its structured growth and tolerance of typical indoor temperatures makes it perfect for growing indoors where space and light are sufficient.
Native to: Southern Mexico, Central America, and parts of northern South America and the Caribbean. It grows terrestrially in tropical forests, often along slopes and forest margins where it receives bright, filtered light and consistent moisture. Leaves are large, sagittate with pronounced posterior lobes, and can reach well over 60 cm in length in mature specimens.
Water: Keep the compost evenly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Anthurium sagittatum prefers a well-draining, airy aroid mix containing bark, perlite, and organic matter. Reduce watering slightly in cooler, darker winter conditions while ensuring the root ball does not fully dry out.
Light: Provide bright filtered light. It tolerates gentle morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid strong direct midday sunlight as this can scorch the leaves. Insufficient light may result in slower growth and smaller leaves. A position near a bright window with light diffusion is ideal.
Humidity: Prefers humidity levels of 60–80%. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity in the UK, steady moderate humidity supports larger leaf development and healthier growth. Good air circulation is important to prevent fungal issues.
Temperature: Thrives in typical indoor temperatures between 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect from cold draughts. Stable warmth encourages consistent leaf production throughout the growing season.
