Grow a garden based on centuries of Native American wisdom with our Three Sisters Seed Collection. The "Three Sisters"—corn, beans, and squash—are the cornerstones of traditional agriculture, a brilliant companion planting system where each plant supports the others. This collection provides everything you need to create your own symbiotic and productive garden patch.
⭐ Why it works
- Corn provides a tall, natural trellis for the pole beans to climb.
- Beans, being nitrogen-fixers, enrich the soil, feeding the heavy-feeding corn and squash.
- Squash provides a living mulch, as its large leaves shade the ground, conserving moisture and suppressing weeds.
- Together, these three foods provide a complete and balanced diet.
🌿 What's in the collection
- Corn, Bodacious (30 Seeds)
- Bean, Blue Lake (50 Seeds)
- Squash, Zucchini Dark Green (25 Seeds)
🌱 Planting instructions
This classic companion planting method is traditionally planted on a small mound.
- Create a mound of soil approximately 4 inches high and 1-2 feet wide, with a small well in the center like a crater.
- After all danger of frost has passed, plant 4 corn seeds in the center well, about 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart.
- When the corn is about 4 inches tall, plant 4 bean seeds halfway down the sides of the mound, about 1 inch deep and at least 3 inches from the corn.
- After the beans have emerged, plant 2 squash seeds on opposite sides of the mound, about 24 inches from the center.
- Train the squash vines to grow outwards, away from the corn and beans. For multiple mounds, space them 3-4 feet apart.
